In Memoriam: Chang Jung Lin (1985 – 2025)

I only knew Chang Jung Lin the way many fans did—through matches watched, titles followed, and quiet moments of brilliance that left a lasting mark. But over the past day, as tributes poured in from those who truly knew him, a deeper portrait began to emerge: a man truly passionate for the sport, eager to help his peers, and whose humility left an impression far beyond the table.

We’ve lost legends before. But this one feels too soon, too sudden. Chang wasn’t a former champion riding on past glory—he was still in the thick of it, competing at the highest level, recently crowned champion, and advancing in yet another major event. He was, by every definition, still in his prime.

And then—he was gone.

In the middle of a tournament. In the middle of his journey. In the middle of life.

If there’s any lesson to be drawn from this painful moment, perhaps it’s this: we don’t get to choose the length of our time, but we do get to choose how we live it. And Chang Jung Lin lived his life doing what he loved—with dignity, grace, and quiet excellence.

Rest in peace, Chang. You were a champion—in more ways than one.
