Sanchez Ruiz Chases Second US Open Crown
Francisco Sanchez Ruiz earned his place in a second US Open final after coming through two major tests against Joshua Filler and fellow Spaniard David Alcaide.
Filler reached the hill first at 9-7 in their quarterfinal, but a dry break opened the door for Sanchez Ruiz. The Spaniard took advantage and completed the comeback to advance.
He then faced Alcaide in an all-Spanish semifinal. After an evenly contested start, Sanchez Ruiz pulled away in the second half of the match to claim a 10-6 victory.
“I’m breaking well and if I can maintain that, I believe I can become a two-time champion.”
A victory in the final would make Sanchez Ruiz just the tenth player in tournament history to win the US Open more than once.
Capito Continues Impressive Run
Robbie Capito reached the final after defeating two of the tournament’s strongest remaining players in Fedor Gorst and Aleksa Pecelj.
Capito first eliminated 2024 US Open champion Gorst 10-8 in the quarterfinals. The result marked his sixth consecutive victory over the former World No.1 on the World Nineball Tour.
He followed that performance with a commanding start against recently crowned Phoenix Open champion Pecelj in the semifinal. Capito raced to a 7-0 advantage before eventually completing a 10-5 victory.
“If I play my best, I believe no one can beat me. No one can take that title away from me.”
The victory sends Capito into his second Matchroom Major final and gives him another opportunity to capture one of the biggest titles of his career.
