Filipino challengers delivered several of the biggest results on 2026 Philippines Open Day 1, as Rodrigo Geronimo, Meynard Tipawan, Edwin Dela Cruz Gamas and Rommel Janael Santos knocked out established names at Gateway Mall 2, Araneta City, on October 20.
Forty first-round matches were completed on the opening day. Defending champion David Alcaide advanced with a 10–1 victory, while Carlo Biado, Robbie Capito and Duong Quoc Hoang each recorded 10–0 wins.
Filipino Challengers Deliver Opening-Day Upsets
Geronimo produced one of the day’s most striking scorelines, defeating Francisco Bustamante 10–0. The result ended the Filipino legend’s campaign at the first hurdle, just days after he captained Team Asia at the Reyes Cup.
Gamas also claimed a notable victory, beating Alex Pagulayan 10–6, while Calil Ramber edged Lee Vann Corteza 10–9. With the tournament played under single elimination, each defeat meant an immediate exit.
Tipawan Eliminates Neuhausen
Meynard Tipawan added another significant result for the Filipino challengers by defeating Moritz Neuhausen 10–6. The Bago City player arrived with recent local titles at the MassKara Billiard 10-Ball Handicapping Tournament and September’s 1st RMR 10-Ball Open Handicapped Tournament.
His victory over Neuhausen, the 2025 Hanoi Open runner-up, carried that form into a World Nineball Tour Major. Tipawan next faces Bryant Saguiped, who defeated Prince Delos Santos 10–3.
Santos Fights Back to Oust Manas
Rommel Janael Santos came through one of the day’s closest matches, recovering from 8–3 down to defeat AJ Manas 10–9. Manas appeared well placed to advance, but Santos turned the match around and completed the comeback in the deciding rack.
Speaking to Matchroom after the defeat, Manas credited his opponent:
“He played really well, so he deserved the win.”
Alcaide, Biado and Other Leading Names Advance
Alcaide began his title defence by conceding only one rack against Rodlin John Bautista. The Spaniard will face Paul John Ortega, a 10–7 winner over Deanmark Castronuevo, in the second round.
Biado defeated David Keith Dennison 10–0, matching the shutouts recorded by Capito against Sowiset Namfon and Duong against Aleksandar Atanasov.
Johann Chua beat Tony Piazza 10–1, Jayson Shaw defeated Kelson Juan by the same score, and Felix Vogel also advanced 10–1 against Yoichi Onodera. Aloysius Yapp overcame Raphael Dabreo 10–2, while Dennis Orcollo defeated Henrick Doguiles 10–3.
Deciding Racks and Other Notable Results
Pierfrancesco Garzia edged former world champion Ronato Alcano 10–9, while Patric Gonzales survived another deciding-rack contest against Jacob Parrent.
Thorsten Hohmann defeated Chezka Centeno 10–5. Oliver Villafuerte, Mohammed Baabad, Roland Garcia and Marvin Asis each advanced with 10–8 victories, while Albert Januarta opened with a 10–3 win over Yuki Komiya.
