For the second consecutive time this year, Anton Raga found himself in the runner-up position of a major tournament, following a defeat to Germany’s Joshua Filler with a score of 5-11 in the 2023 China Open.
This marks the second instance for Raga finishing as the runner-up in this event, his previous defeat coming at the hands of Wu Jiaqing in 2019.
Adding intrigue to the event, Joshua Filler secured his second China Open title, having previously clinched the championship in 2017 by besting Chang Jung Lin of Chinese Taipei.
Now, let’s delve into the Finals match. The game remained neck and neck in the beginning, with the score tied at 3-3. However, a couple of illegal breaks by Raga and a missed shot on the 6-ball in the 8th rack created a significant advantage for the German, propelling him to a commanding lead as he reached a score of 10-5. At this juncture, mounting a comeback seemed virtually impossible for Raga, given the alternate break format and the template rack, which practically guaranteed a successful wing ball pocketed with every break.
The silver lining is that Raga appeared unbeatable in most of his matches throughout the tournament, except for his sole loss to Filler, whom he had previously defeated in the 2023 European Open semifinals.
With a series of upcoming tournaments in which Raga will participate, he can harness the confidence and momentum gained from his recent performances, potentially culminating in his first international title.
